AMD Ryzen 5 3500U Mobile Processor with Radeon Vega 8 Graphics

AMD Ryzen 5 3500U mobile processor is a mid-range laptop APU chip integrated with Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics. It was released in 2019 as part of the second-generation Zen+ core architecture, “Picasso”; which serves to improve energy efficiency while providing high clock speeds. This chip supports DDR4-2400 dual-channel memory which ensures that the CPU operates at a higher frequency than its DDR3 counterparts. For this reason, it offers a base clock of 2.1GHz, with the potential to be boosted to a 3.7GHz limit.

Just like other Ryzen 5 CPUs, this chip has 4 cores and 8 threads. The small transistor size (12nm) gives it a performance advantage over the 14nm chips such as the Ryzen 5 2500U. The chip’s base and boost clock speeds support the majority of tasks, so it is not unlocked for overclocking. The chip is also laced with AMD’s SenseMI technology which serves to enhance performance by incorporating true machine intelligence capabilities.

The TDP is configurable (cTDP) from 12 to 25 Watts, 15 Watts being nominal. This permits the chip to consume low power, even when executing resource-demanding tasks. This significantly impacts the durability of the battery both in the short and long term; as users will find that his processor can provide them with up to 11 hours of battery life while still managing some demanding tasks and apps.

Ryzen 5 3500U is designated for mainstream laptops and has the capacity to support both home and office tasks. It can comfortably multitask and even supports some high-end processes such as video editing and light gaming. The integrated Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics card offers 8 compute units (CUs) translating to 512 shaders (relatively equivalent to CPU cores, but more specialized) that relieve processing load from the CPU. Its clock speed goes as high as 1100MHz. It is a 6th generation graphics card that ranks 95th in power and 1st in popularity among AMD GPUs, and can comfortably support light gaming, for games such as Minecraft, League of Legends and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Performance-wise, Ryzen 5 3500U ranks between Intel’s corei7 8th generation processors and 7th generation processors as of 24th September, 2021. This is a very good ranking considering the performance statistics of Intel’s 7th and 8th gen processors. As part of the Ryzen 5 series, this CPU delivers high performance, while consuming less power, hence generating less heat. This plays a significant role in laptop cooling.
