The AMD Ryzen 5 4600H is a high-performance mobile processor launched in January 2020 alongside Ryzen 5 4600U and Ryzen 5 4500U. The 4600H comes with 6 integrated cores that simultaneously process 12 threads at a time, because of SMT support. The cores are clocked at a base frequency of 3.0GHz, which is 0.9GHz higher than the base clock speed of 4600U. Ryzen 5 4600H has a turbo boost frequency of 4.0GHz and an integrated Radeon Vega 6 graphics which operates at a maximum GPU frequency of up to 1500MHz.
Additionally, the chip’s (Renoir) die is based on the Zen 2 architecture featuring 4MB and 8MB L2 and L3 cache memory per core, respectively, operating at a higher cache hit rate. Summarily, the Zen 2 architecture improves the overall performance and efficiency of the Ryzen 5 4600H, that is: the instructions per unit of energy is approximately doubled – its branch prediction accuracy, clock and data gating improvements, low-power design methodology.
This processor is manufactured using the modern 7nm TSMC’s FinFET technology which greatly improves its performance and power efficiency per Watt. The Ryzen 5 4500U is designed to offer high (optimal) performance under 45W TDP (Thermal Design Power). This means the chip was intended for big laptops, including gaming laptops like ASUS TUF Gaming A15 with a screen display size of 15.6”. However, the default TDP can be configured as low as 35W and as high as 54W to offer desired performance depending on the user’s preference. Just make sure the laptop is equipped with an efficient cooling system.
Ryzen 5 4600H also supports PCIe 3.0 which is used to communicate between the chipset and storage devices or other components. Furthermore, it offers support for a DDR4 memory channel that operates up to 3200MHz as well as an LPDDR4 memory controller that runs up to 4266MHz RAM. Some of the advantages Ryzen 5 4500U has over 4600H is it consumes 54% less power than 4600H (25W vs. 54W) and can support up to 64GB DDR4-3200 RAM. 4500U may boast high power efficiency over 4600H but, performance-wise, 4600H wins when all its cores are involved. According to Cinebench R23, 4600H scores 33% higher in multicore performance when compared to 4500U and 2% higher than 4600U.
